Happy new year ?

[Totally]

Happy New Year everyone, and hope the start of the year has been a good one so far.

Following on from the discussions over the holidays, it makes sense to begin moving forward properly with this forum idea. There has already been enough momentum and interest around it that it would be a shame to let it drift. Even in these early stages, it is clear there is a foundation worth building on, and now is probably the right time to start shaping it more intentionally.

As agreed, Jonathan (@Codeberg) and @quantumday will be taking the lead on coordinating the next steps. That includes helping to define structure, guiding the initial setup decisions, and making sure the core direction of the forum stays consistent as things develop. It is still very much an early-stage project, so flexibility will be important, but having clear direction from the start should help avoid confusion later on.

At this point, the focus should remain on building something stable and usable rather than overcomplicating things too early. A simple, clear structure is usually more effective than trying to anticipate every possible category or use case upfront. Once activity increases, it will become much easier to see what actually needs expanding, merging, or adjusting.

It would also be helpful for members to continue contributing ideas and feedback as the forum grows. Early input often shapes long-term direction more than people realise, especially when it comes to layout, categories, and how discussions naturally form. Even small suggestions can help refine the experience over time.

There is also a broader sense that this could evolve into something more than just a discussion space, depending on how engagement develops. Whether it becomes more technical, community-driven, or topic-specific will largely depend on how people choose to use it in these early stages.

For now, the priority is simply to keep things moving forward in a steady and structured way, while still allowing room for organic growth. It is still early days, but there is a solid starting point here, and it will be interesting to see how it develops over the coming weeks and months.

Wishing everyone a solid 2026

Happy New Year to everyone involved. This feels like one of those "we'll look back in six months and laugh at how small it all started" moments. Forums always begin a bit scrappy, then somehow turn into full ecosystems when nobody is looking

[codeberg]

Good to see the decision to actually move forward with this. A lot of projects get stuck in the "good idea" phase forever, so pushing it into reality is already a big step. Also, respect for picking people to lead it instead of just leaving it floating in group chat limbo.

[VB]

New year, new forum, same problem of trying to figure out what to post first
There is always that awkward early phase where everyone is polite, observant, and pretending they totally know what direction things are going in.

[QuantumDay]

Be sure to help curate the boards and modifications for all the features we want to see

[codeberg]

Feels like one of those setups where in a few months people will say "remember when this was just getting started?" and half the current structure won't even exist anymore. That is usually a good sign though.

[Totally]

Letting a couple of people take the lead is probably the only way this stays organised. Otherwise it turns into ten people all saying "we should add a section for this" until the forum becomes a spaghetti menu

[VB]

Happy New Year all. There is something funny about how every new online community starts with serious coordination talk, and then eventually someone posts a meme and everything changes forever

[Totally]

This is the part where everything still feels flexible and slightly experimental. Once the first real wave of users comes in, the forum basically decides what it wants to become on its own.

[Quanta]

Not a bad time to start something like this either. New year energy tends to push people into actually committing to ideas instead of just talking about them endlessly. That alone might be the biggest advantage here

[Totally]

It will be interesting to see what direction this takes. Some forums stay very structured, others become chaotic but entertaining in a good way. Both outcomes tend to happen by accident more than design.

[Totally]

Same here. A really Good thread this

[Quanta]

There is always that early "who is actually going to post first properly" phase in new forums. After that, things usually either click or quietly disappear. Hopefully this one ends up in the first category

Happy new year two weeks later

[veritas.io]

Basically my experience exactly. Give it a go and report back

[veritas.io]

Happy New Year to everyone involved in getting this off the ground. It is always interesting watching a project like this move from idea to something real, because the early stage has this mix of structure planning and uncertainty that never quite lasts long. Once activity starts picking up, the shape of the forum will probably change in ways nobody fully expects at the start

There is also something quite important about actually committing to the idea rather than leaving it as discussion. A lot of communities never get past that point, so seeing leadership being defined early on gives it a better chance of stabilising into something usable and active.

[Quanta]

Good to see momentum continuing into the new year. That transition from "we should do this" to "we are doing this" is usually the hardest part, and it looks like it has been crossed here. Now it is more about building something that can survive real users rather than just planning in theory.

There is always a funny early phase in forums where everything feels slightly too organised because nobody has broken anything yet. Give it a bit of time and the natural chaos usually balances things out That is normally when things start becoming interesting.

[One-One-Five]

Letting specific people take the lead is probably the only practical way to keep things from drifting. Otherwise every small decision becomes a group debate and nothing ever really gets finalised. Having Jonathan and @quantumday steer it gives it a clearer direction, at least in the early stages.

That said, leadership in early forums tends to be more about guiding flow than controlling outcomes. Once users start engaging, the direction often shifts based on where conversations naturally grow rather than any initial plan.

[VB]

Happy New Year everyone. This feels like one of those setups that will look very different a few months down the line, in a good way. Early structure always gets stress-tested quickly once real posting begins, and that is usually when you find out what actually works.

There is also a tendency for early enthusiasm to shape culture more than anything else. The tone set in the first few weeks often sticks around longer than expected, even after the forum grows far beyond its initial group.

[TommyB_20]

It is always slightly amusing how serious the early coordination phase of a forum can feel. Everyone is carefully planning structure, categories, and direction, and then eventually someone posts something random and the whole vibe shifts anyway

Still, that early planning matters. It gives the space enough stability that it does not collapse into confusion on day one. After that, the community usually takes over the rest naturally.

[DQ Eric]

This is a good point in time to be making decisions like this because nothing is locked in yet. Early flexibility is one of the biggest advantages a new forum has, even if it feels a bit unstructured at first.

Once content starts building up, changing things becomes more complicated, so getting a rough direction now makes sense. After that, it is mostly about adapting to how people actually use the space rather than how it was originally imagined.

[WaveFunction34]

There is something quite interesting about watching a forum form from scratch. At first it is mostly coordination and setup discussion, but very quickly it turns into actual conversations, inside jokes, and unexpected threads that nobody planned for.

That shift usually happens faster than people expect. One day it is "how should we structure categories" and the next it is a full discussion about something completely unrelated that ends up becoming the most active thread

[Ria99]

Lunar new year?
Happy New Year all. This kind of project often succeeds or fails based on how quickly it moves from planning into real interaction. Too slow and it loses momentum, too fast and it becomes messy. Finding that balance is usually the tricky part.

So far it feels like it is being handled in a fairly sensible way, with enough direction to stay coherent but enough openness for it to evolve naturally. That combination tends to work best in the long run.

[WhatUQuant]

That is the conclusion most people following it closely are landing on. Context gets lost very quickly once something becomes a trending topic.

Interesting to see where it goes

[Warden]

There is a quiet satisfaction in seeing something like this actually start. Most ideas never leave the discussion stage, so even getting to this point is already progress. From here it is more about consistency than anything else.

Once people start returning regularly, the forum will likely develop its own identity without too much forcing. That is usually when it becomes genuinely interesting to be part of.

[TheRizz]

Early forum phases always have this "calm before the activity" feeling. Everything looks organised, discussions are polite, and nothing has gone off track yet. It almost feels temporary because experience says it usually changes quite quickly

[Louise84]

Still, that is part of the fun. Watching it shift from structured beginnings into something more alive and unpredictable is usually where the real value of a community starts to show.

[Midnight Georgia]

Nearly did a happy April fools day then. but happy to report I had a good Xmas

[VB]

I'm glad for you mate.

Still, the energy is there, and that is usually the rare part. Most projects never even get past the "we should totally do this" phase. At least this one has usernames being tagged already, which is basically industrial-grade commitment in internet terms

[alwaysMason58]

tts hard to believe that New Year was half a year ago already.  This slightly chaotic but promising forum experiment. Nothing says "fresh start" like immediately assigning people tasks before the coffee has even kicked in.

[DigitalNomad76]

Moving forward quickly after the holidays sounds productive, but it also has that familiar smell of decisions made while still half in vacation mode. Rushing structure too early can sometimes lock in ideas that feel good in January and questionable by February.

That said, if Codeberg and the others are already aligned, then at least there is coordination instead of chaos pretending to be strategy. Worth testing things before anything becomes permanent and starts collecting its own momentum.

[Slay]

Assigning roles this early always feels a bit like forming a band before anyone knows what instrument they actually play.
Someone ends up on drums just because nobody said no fast enough.  The idea itself is solid though, especially if the goal is to keep direction without turning it into a committee simulator.

If anything, the real challenge will be stopping people from over-organising what is still basically a newborn forum with ambition. Can't wait for 2027

[NickFury]

Definitely looking forward to the first live Qday, and having it as one of the first proper forum activities of 2027 feels like a good way to start the year. The Christmas and New Year period is usually a bit chaotic anyway, so giving everyone a chance to settle back in before piling on responsibilities makes sense. I would keep the first event fairly informal, get a feel for who turns up and what people enjoy, then sort out roles afterwards. Otherwise we will have a full production crew assembled before anyone has even found the kettle.

[Ann13]

This year has gone so far. It now feels only a few months away from xmas yet again. Hopefully we can carry some of that relaxed Xmas/New Year atmosphere into the first event of 2027 without turning it into a meeting where everyone arrives with a spreadsheet and three assigned roles. The first one should really be about getting people involved, seeing what works, and having a bit of fun with it before we start worrying about who is doing what for the rest of the year.

[TheRizz]

Its a bit early for 2027 lol

[Sienna74]

Three months to 2027 already? Feels like we were just arguing about whether 2024 was going to end with fireworks or a whimper. Time really does sprint when you're not watching.

[Sharp Scholar]

Early? Maybe. But if we wait until December, half the forum will be asleep under a pile of wrapping paper and Quality Street tins. Better to plan while our brains still work.

[Panther21]

Technically, if you live in Australia or New Zealand, 2027 is closer than you think. So really, this post is just ahead of the curve for our Southern Hemisphere friends.

[CollapseState]

If we're doing early celebrations, can we at least agree to skip the 'new year, new me' speeches until January? One round of those per year is quite enough, thanks

[Mitchell93]

Call me cynical, but I'll believe 2027 is coming when it doesn't bring another round of 'remember when things were normal?' nostalgia posts. Here's to fewer of those.

[KDB]

Happy New Year in October? Bold strategy. I respect it. Let's just hope the rest of the year doesn't sprint past us like a train with no brakes.

[Omega16]

Three months away and already planning? Some of us are still trying to figure out what we did with our 2026 resolutions. One step at a time

[Yasmin_63]

I'm with the OP: why not start the hype now? Gives us something to look forward to besides the usual 'how's everyone doing?' threads in the dead of winter

[GothamKnight]

Look, if starting the 2027 chat now means fewer 'what are your plans?' threads in December, I'm all for it. Efficiency is the ultimate form of kindness.
