A practical thread for a relentless year. Between the tournament, the tech upheavals and the general state of everything, the firehose has rarely been this pressurised, so let us compare actual routines, HOW do you follow the news in a way that keeps you informed without keeping you submerged

The routine census questions, your sources and roughly how many, the schedule if you have one, morning bulletin people versus evening roundup people versus the always on, and the filters you apply, topics muted, apps deleted, the paper once a week, whatever the mechanism, describe the machine

The honest wellbeing paragraph because it belongs here, doomscrolling is a design outcome rather than a personal failing, the feeds are built by very clever people to be bottomless, and most people who report a healthy news relationship describe the same two moves, a CONTAINER for the news with edges around it, and at least one slow format in the mix, the weekly magazine, the long read, the bulletin with an end

And the question that always produces the best answers, what is your rule for the big breaking story, the day something enormous happens, do you dive, ration, or deliberately wait for the dust, because the first hours are famously the least accurate and the most compelling, and everyone handles that trap differently

Routine disclosed, one morning bulletin with a defined end, one weekly magazine at the weekend, phone apps deleted two years ago, and the honest report is I am BETTER informed than my always on years because retention replaced volume

The container with edges framing is exactly right, mine is radio news at breakfast and nothing after eight in the evening, the evening boundary mattered more than the morning one, the last thing in your head before sleep should not be a push notification

Rogue Sam

Always on representative because someone has to be, my work genuinely requires it, and the survival adaptations are real, heavy muting, three trusted sources over thirty loud ones, and a hard rule that reading the news is done sitting down on purpose, never standing in a queue by reflex

Vacant Falcon

Never by reflex is the whole battle honestly, the queue scroll is where the hours go

Leopard96

Big story rule as invited, deliberately wait, learned it watching a breaking event years ago where nearly everything reported in the first three hours was later corrected, now I note that something happened and meet the story the next morning when it has stopped shape shifting, missed nothing yet, spared much

RainyDayFund

The wait rule is wise and has one exception worth naming, anything where the news is actionable for your safety or your people, weather, local emergencies, then the first hours matter and the trusted LOCAL source earns its place in the machine

CyberRider56

Slow format testimony, added one long read per week in place of an hour of feeds and the strange result is feeling calmer AND sharper, the feeds gave me a hundred updates about ten stories, the long read gives the whole shape of one, shape turns out to be the nutrient

Shape is the nutrient deserves to be on the masthead of every serious outlet remaining

Confession for balance, tried every system in this thread and relapse into the scroll during big weeks anyway, the honest routine is container, edges, and forgiving yourself the collapses, the design fighting you was built by professionals, losing occasionally is not a character verdict

The tournament wrinkle deserves a mention, sport is my one permitted always on channel and it quietly satisfies the checking urge that news used to exploit, the World Cup is currently functioning as methadone for my feeds and I am not sure the arrangement is stupid

ECWAlex98

Census conclusion, edges beat willpower, slow formats restore shape, the first hours lie beautifully, local sources earn exceptions, and one member is treating the World Cup as harm reduction which the board endorses provisionally, routines to be re audited when the final whistle blows
