That is the approach I always take now. I find the YouTube tutorials are better than any written guide for the tricky bits.

Welcome aboard! The forum vortex is very good at pretending it only needs five minutes of your time, then somehow you are three pages deep into a thread about something you did not even know you were interested in. Bringing VB along is a good move too, especially if you already know they will enjoy the place.

Best thing to do as a new member is just jump into whatever catches your eye. There is no need to wait until you have something profound to contribute. A quick opinion, a useful tip or even a "what on earth is going on here?" post is enough to get a conversation started.

The signup threads are always a nice way to break the ice, but the real fun usually comes once you find a couple of sections that suit you. Give it a few days and you will probably have a favourite board without quite remembering when that happened.

And if VB does join, make sure they are warned about the dangerous phrase "just one more thread". That is how it starts.
