A box in your basement can make itself colder than freezing outdoor air, and that trick is the entire secret behind its efficiency

[Coder53]

A heat pump does not create heat the way a furnace burns fuel to generate it, instead it moves heat from one place to another, which sounds like a small distinction but is actually the entire reason heat pumps can be dramatically more energy efficient than traditional heating systems. A heat pump running in heating mode extracts warmth from the outside air, even when that air feels freezing cold to a person standing in it, and transfers it indoors, while in cooling mode it simply runs the exact same process in reverse, working essentially like a refrigerator for an entire house

The seemingly impossible part, pulling heat out of already cold outdoor air, works because the heat pump's refrigerant can be engineered to run even colder than the air outside it. Heat naturally flows from warmer things to colder things, so as long as the refrigerant inside the system is colder than the outdoor air, however cold that air already is, heat will still flow into the refrigerant, which then gets compressed, warmed further, and released inside the home

Because most of the delivered warmth is transferred rather than generated from scratch, a typical heat pump can be roughly three to four times more efficient than a gas boiler or electric heater, according to the International Energy Agency, meaning the heat output delivered is several times greater than the electrical energy actually used to power the system. Cold climate heat pump models have been specifically engineered to keep this efficiency advantage even in genuinely frigid conditions, well below freezing, addressing what used to be the technology's biggest practical limitation for colder regions

The refrigerant being engineered to run colder than the already freezing outside air is the detail that actually makes this whole concept click, that is such a clever workaround

[Dark Hawk]

Three to four times more efficient than a gas boiler is a striking efficiency gap once you actually see the number rather than just hearing heat pumps are more efficient as a vague claim

[DigitalNomad62]

The refrigerator analogy running in reverse for heating mode is such a clean way to explain something that otherwise sounds almost like it violates basic intuition about how heat works

[Red Wrench]

Cold climate models specifically addressing the historical weakness in frigid regions is an important update, that limitation used to be the main argument against heat pumps in colder climates

[Reuben]

This finally explains why heat pumps keep getting pushed so hard as a climate solution, the efficiency math holds up rather than it just being an environmentally trendy talking point

[Tia79]

This is a satisfying mechanism to understand, it turns something that initially sounds like it should not work into something that makes complete physical sense

[ControlPlane Priya]

Good reminder that heat naturally flows from warm to cold regardless of how cold the warm side actually is in absolute terms, that basic physics principle is doing all the real work here

[RedCougar]

The International Energy Agency being the source here gives this real authoritative weight rather than just a marketing claim from a heat pump manufacturer

[RightAbout24]

They are noisy as hell. I wouldnt get one. Solar panel and wind turbine for me please

[Vanessa26]

Appreciate the honest framing that this used to have real limitations in cold climates, engineering progress addressing that gap feels more credible than if the explainer just glossed over it
