Xbox is calling more of its staff back to the office. Pure Xbox's Fraser Gilbert reports that from 1 February 2027, Xbox employees in the Puget Sound area who live within 50 miles of the Studio D building on Microsoft's Redmond campus must be in the office at least four days a week

That is stricter than Microsoft's general rule of three days. The requirement comes from an internal memo by Xbox chief people officer Jacinda Chislum Pearson, which was first reported by The Verge

The memo says thousands of Xbox employees live within commuting distance. It argues that working in person makes it easier to review work and make decisions without needing extra meetings, and it expects leaders to be in the building

Some studios with their own established office practices may be exempt. The change comes on top of the job cuts and restructuring we have been discussing

Return to office mandates have been controversial across the tech industry. Supporters say collaboration improves, while critics say good people leave. With so many cuts already, morale at Xbox may be fragile

Are four day office mandates good for game development? And could this push talented developers to leave?
