Microsoft announced that Xbox Cloud Gaming, previously unlimited for Game Pass subscribers, will introduce monthly hour caps starting in November. Game Pass Ultimate, the highest tier at 22.99 dollars a month, will include 15 hours of cloud gaming, Game Pass Premium gets 10 hours, and Game Pass Essential gets 5 hours. Once a subscriber uses up their included hours, they'll be able to purchase additional cloud playtime through the Xbox Store, though exact pricing and packages haven't been announced yet and may vary by market

Xbox said in its announcement that the cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it and play for longer, and that moving to monthly limits lets the company keep offering the service while continuing to invest in its reliability and performance, while acknowledging the practical result is a higher cost for some players. The company estimates the change will only affect around 4 percent of Game Pass subscribers, framing heavy cloud gaming users as a small minority rather than the norm

Critics note that 4 percent figure cuts both ways, it suggests cloud gaming, long touted as a model of gaming's future, actually sees fairly limited regular use, while also confirming this move functions as a gradual price increase specifically targeting the subscribers who use the service most. The change comes as Xbox's new CEO Asha Sharma has been reviewing business model changes aimed at returning the division to growth and improving profitability. Curious what people think about ending years of unlimited cloud streaming access, does a 4 percent impact estimate make this a reasonable trade-off, or does it set an uncomfortable precedent for future Game Pass changes

Framing this as only affecting 4 percent of subscribers is technically true but also a pretty transparent way to downplay what's fundamentally a price increase for the specific users who valued cloud gaming most as an actual core feature
