Why does GTA 6's physical version in Japan come with a code that expires after only 170 days?

[Rob98]

Quick explainer since this detail is confusing a lot of people. Rockstar's official GTA 6 support page states that in Japan specifically, the PlayStation download code included in physical box copies will expire 170 days after the issuance date, which Rockstar defines as the game's actual launch day of November 19, 2026. That puts the hard cutoff at May 8, 2027, meaning anyone who buys an unopened physical copy after that date could end up with a completely dead code inside the box

The reason traces back to Japan's Payment Services Act, which regulates prepaid instruments like gift cards and game codes. Under that law, any prepaid instrument set to expire within six months skips a whole set of registration, reporting and security deposit requirements that apply to longer lasting codes. Companies selling in Japan tend to deliberately cap validity just under that six month line to avoid the extra regulatory burden, and 170 days comfortably fits under that threshold with some room to spare

This restriction only applies to the Japanese version and does not affect Xbox digital codes, since those are not region locked the same way PS5 codes are, and no other region currently has anything like this listed on Rockstar's support page. It has nothing to do with Sony's separate plan to stop manufacturing new PlayStation game discs from January 2028, though the timing of both stories landing close together has understandably fueled more frustration about the state of physical versus digital game ownership

So this is basically a regulatory workaround rather than Rockstar being deliberately hostile to Japanese players, that actually makes it a lot less sinister sounding

[Craig]

Still feels like a weird thing to inflict on customers even if the legal reasoning behind it is understandable

[Cesaro27]

Does this mean unsold copies just get pulled from shelves in Japan after May 8, 2027, or do stores keep selling dead codes

[VoidSentinel74]

Nobody seems totally sure yet, Rockstar has not clarified whether retailers will pull unsold stock or how they will handle codes issued right at the edge of the window

[StarforgeSocket]

170 days sounds long until you realize plenty of people buy physical copies and let them sit unopened for way longer than that

[Brittle Coder]

Xbox not having this same restriction because of region lock differences is an interesting technical detail buried in all this

[HeartbreakKidCurtis18]

Good breakdown, definitely did not expect a six month prepaid instrument law to be the actual explanation behind a GTA 6 headline

[Tia7]

This is a good reminder that a lot of weird regional gaming quirks trace back to boring compliance law rather than corporate decisions

[BatchWizard]

Appreciate the explainer, I had assumed this was some petty region specific restriction rather than a deliberate regulatory threshold dodge

[Zach72]

Coming right after the Sony disc discontinuation news, this really does feel like digital ownership keeps getting more fragile in small annoying ways
