Every gamer has at least one guilty pleasure. A game that critics savaged, fans mocked and the internet decided was a disaster, yet you played it for hundreds of hours and loved every minute. Sometimes these games were misunderstood, sometimes they were ahead of their time and sometimes they are just plain bad in a way that is weirdly enjoyable. Either way, it is time to defend them

There are plenty of famous examples. Games that launched broken but later became great, like No Man's Sky. Sequels that fans rejected for changing too much, or spin offs that went in an unexpected direction. Then there are oddities, like licensed movie games or budget titles that somehow struck a chord with a small group of players

My own pick is a racing game from years ago that reviewers called repetitive and shallow. They were not wrong, but it had a soundtrack I still listen to and handling that just felt right to me. I must have played it for a whole summer. I would not recommend it to anyone else, but I will defend it forever. Nostalgia might be the only thing holding it together

Sometimes the things we love about a game are personal. It might remind us of a particular time in our lives, a friend we played with or a place we lived. Nostalgia does a lot of heavy lifting

What game do you love that everyone else seems to hate? Make your defence as passionate as you like
