Someone in my household wants to try tabletop RPGs after watching some actual play content online. I have played D&D 5e a little but I am wondering whether it is still the right recommendation for a genuine beginner in 2026, or whether something like Pathfinder 2e, Ironsworn, or one of the rules-light systems would be a better entry point. What would you tell someone starting from scratch?

D&D 5e is still the answer for one reason: the player base. Finding a table, finding a DM, finding online resources is so much easier than any alternative

If you are going to be the GM as well as the player, Ironsworn is brilliant. Solo or co-op, no prep required, and the rules teach you how to think about the fiction
Works on my machine :D

Pathfinder 2e is excellent but it is not a beginner system. The crunch is enormous and rewarding, but only once you know what you are doing

Kids on Bikes or Honey Heist for a true beginner one-shot. Low rules overhead, high comedy, everyone has a great time without reading a rulebook
It's only banter... mostly

Cypher System by Monte Cook Games is underrated as an entry point. The GM-facing rules are streamlined in ways that make running the game much easier

ICRPG by Runehammer is worth a look if you want something that respects D&D but simplifies the parts that slow down actual play
