Not looking to start a fight over anyone's favorite game here, more curious about the genuine disconnect that happens sometimes between a game's reputation and your own actual experience with it, where you go in expecting to love something universally praised and just... don't, for reasons that might not even be entirely clear to you

These usually aren't bad games either, that's what makes the disconnect interesting, it's rarely a matter of quality, more often a mismatch between what a game is actually offering and what you personally want out of the time you spend playing something

So, what's your pick, the widely beloved, critically acclaimed game that you just bounced off despite everyone around you insisting you're missing something

CometSerpent

Never got the appeal of most souls-like games, I understand intellectually why people love the difficulty and the sense of earned progress, it just isn't fun for me personally no matter how many times I try to get into one

Dom_8

Bounced off completely from one of the most acclaimed open world games of the last decade, the map felt so bloated with busywork that I never actually got invested in the actual story buried underneath it all
Currently losing at something

Mine is a beloved farming sim everyone I know is obsessed with, I understand the appeal on paper and it just doesn't click with me the way it clicks with literally everyone else I talk to about it

Edward71

Never got into one of the most praised narrative heavy games of recent years, the gameplay itself felt like such an afterthought compared to how much attention the story gets in every conversation about it

Molly17

A hugely beloved competitive shooter that everyone I know plays religiously just never grabbed me, I understand the skill ceiling is impressive but the actual moment to moment gameplay loop doesn't hold my attention

NadirDriver

This is such a relatable thread, there's always at least one universally beloved game you just can't force yourself to enjoy no matter how many times people insist you'll get into it eventually

Mine is a wildly popular roguelike everyone swears by, the loop of constantly restarting from scratch just frustrates me rather than feeling rewarding the way it clearly does for most people who play it

Mine is an acclaimed puzzle game that everyone talks about as a masterpiece, played it fully expecting to love it and just found the pacing dragged in a way nobody else seems to mention

Protocol

Good reminder that critical acclaim and personal enjoyment really are two separate things, plenty of well made games just don't match what any individual person actually wants from their time playing
