Not finishing games is surprisingly common. Studies of achievement data regularly show that most players never see the credits, even for hugely popular titles. Life gets in the way, attention drifts to something new or a difficulty spike stops progress dead. But some unfinished games still rank among our favourites

I have a few in this category. A huge open world RPG that I adored for sixty hours before getting distracted by something new. A strategy game where I loved the early game so much I kept restarting. And a puzzle game where I hit one puzzle so hard that I gave up, even though I still think about it

Sometimes not finishing a game is a sign it was too long, which is a common complaint about modern open world titles. Other times it is a sign that we enjoyed the journey more than the destination. Some players deliberately avoid the ending because they do not want the game to be over

I think it is fine to love a game you never finish. Games are not homework, and the experience matters more than the credits. Still, it is interesting to know which unfinished games people value most. Sometimes the best moment is the middle, not the end

What is the best game you have never finished? Why did you stop, and will you ever go back?

Breath of the Wild. I spent so long exploring that I never fought Ganon

I think part of me did not want it to end. Hyrule was too nice to leave. Tears of the Kingdom sits unfinished too
My model is always one epoch away from greatness

Souls games beat me. Dark Souls especially, where I hit a wall at a certain boss and never got past it

Still think it is brilliant though. Ornstein and Smough, if anyone is wondering
