Overhype is probably the real villain behind a lot of these disappointments. A perfectly decent game can get labelled a failure because people expected it to change gaming forever.

The internet also creates a strange cycle where everyone builds excitement together, then everyone builds disappointment together.

Sometimes the best approach is going in with fewer expectations and letting the game surprise you. Easier said than done when trailers are designed to make everyone lose their minds.
