A piece of Valve history that fans have wondered about for years is now preserved. PC Gamer reports that F-Stop, a prototype Portal prequel, has appeared online almost two decades after it was shelved

F-Stop was made during a roughly three month game jam at Valve after the Orange Box launched in 2007, reportedly with Gabe Newell pausing normal work so the team could experiment. The jam produced five prototypes. F-Stop mixed Team Fortress 2's cartoon look with a mid century, wood panelled version of Aperture Science

Its central tool was a camera that captured objects and let you place them elsewhere to solve puzzles, an idea later explored by the 2023 game Viewfinder. Staff liked it, but playtests were lukewarm and it was set aside, with parts of its world building feeding into Portal 2 and Aperture Desk Job

Most of its assets surfaced in August's Steam data leak, and the Valve Cut Content Team community later obtained the source code and map files to rebuild it. Full playthroughs are now on YouTube. It includes an early version of Cave Johnson voiced by someone other than J.K. Simmons, and the first appearance of Aperture's personality cores as companions

Prototypes like this show how games evolve through experiments that never ship. F-Stop is a fascinating road not taken for Valve. It is good that it has been preserved, even if the route it took to get out was unofficial

Would you have wanted F-Stop as a full game? And should studios release their old prototypes officially?

Gabe pausing the whole company for a game jam is very Valve. That culture produced some amazing games. It also explains why releases take so long. Their flat structure has upsides and downsides
