For a change of pace, Ultra Pro Wrestling, the independent wrestling video game first announced back in February 2023, has released a 25 minute showcase video. Fightful says nearly 15 minutes of it is in ring gameplay, alongside a look at the controls and the selection menus. It is the most we have seen of the game for a long time. Fans who have been following it will finally get a proper look

The announced roster mixes legends and indie favourites. Names include Matt Cardona, Jake The Snake Roberts, Alex Shelley, Chris Sabin, Arn Anderson, British Bulldog, Buff Bagwell, Bull Nakano, Gangrel, Magnum TA and Dynamite Kid. That is a fun and slightly eclectic mix, with some real icons from very different eras. Licensing that many names cannot have been cheap

The project has not had an easy time. A report from Insider Gaming in September described development and release problems, although the Fightful article does not go into the details. No release date or confirmed platforms have been announced. After more than three years of development, some fans have started to wonder whether it will ever come out. Indie game development is hard enough without licensing a roster of legends

Wrestling games have been a mixed bag outside of the official WWE series, with the AEW game and various indie projects getting a lukewarm reception. There is clearly demand for something different, though, especially from fans who miss the arcade feel of older games like WWF No Mercy. A smaller studio with a passion for the business could do something interesting if it gets the gameplay right

Has anyone watched the showcase yet? How does the gameplay look? And which legend on that roster would you pick first?

Coffee first. Questions later.
