Total War: Shogun 2 - Complete Edition, Creative Assembly's remaster of its much loved strategy game, has launched to an Overwhelmingly Negative rating on Steam. GamesRadar reports that only 19 percent of 677 reviews were positive when the article was written. SEGA publishes the game

The main complaint is the art. Players accuse the remaster of using AI upscaled artwork, and they have shared plenty of examples. In one, a mounted warrior's moustached face now looks more like a Stormtrooper helmet. New artwork reportedly shows classic AI mistakes, such as hands with six fingers

Performance is another problem. Players say the remaster runs worse than the original game and worse than newer Total War titles. They also report a mix of old bugs that were never fixed and new bugs introduced by the remaster. For $10 more than the original, that is a tough sell

The biggest frustration is that the original game has been removed from the Steam store. New buyers can only get the remaster, although existing owners can still play the old version. That decision has turned a disappointing remaster into something that feels like a downgrade for newcomers

Shogun 2 is one of the best loved Total War games, so it deserves better. GamesRadar hopes the developers fix the problems and bring back the original, and that seems like the obvious answer. Creative Assembly has responded to fan feedback before, so there is reason to hope

Have you tried the remaster? And should the original Shogun 2 go back on sale?
