Tomb Raider: Catalyst quietly slips to 2028 after Amazon exec casually lets it slip in an unrelated interview

[Beth3.0]

Tomb Raider: Catalyst, the next mainline entry in the Lara Croft series, has been delayed from its original 2027 release window to 2028, according to comments from Amazon Games boss Jeffrey Gattis. The delay was not announced through a formal press release, but came up almost as an aside during an interview with The Game Business podcast that was primarily about Amazon's cloud gaming service Luna coming to Prime Video

Gattis confirmed that Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a full remake of the very first Tomb Raider game, is still on track for February 12, 2027, and simply added that Catalyst will follow in 2028. Both games were originally revealed together at The Game Awards in December 2025, with Catalyst initially eyeing 2027 and Legacy of Atlantis eyeing an earlier window, so spacing the two games a full year apart now makes sense given Crystal Dynamics is developing both titles

Catalyst is described as a bold new direction for the franchise, sending Lara Croft to Northern India in the wake of a mythical cataclysm that has unleashed ancient secrets and awakened forces guarding them, competing against other notorious treasure hunters drawn to the region. It is set to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and Steam, built on Unreal Engine 5, though Amazon has not given a specific release date or explained the reasoning behind the delay beyond the natural spacing with Legacy of Atlantis

Announcing a delay by casually mentioning it in an unrelated Luna interview is such a low key way to break news like this

[RusticRidge]

Having Crystal Dynamics work on both games simultaneously was always going to create some kind of scheduling squeeze, this makes total sense

[Wandering Matt]

Legacy of Atlantis being a leaner remake first sounds like the smarter release order, easing back into the franchise before the bigger new entry

[EntangledOne]

Northern India as the setting is a fresh location for the series, curious how that translates visually compared to past games

[Coder58]

No official confirmation or explanation from Amazon directly is a bit odd, feels like they are letting the exec's comments do the work for them

[Mick79]

A full year gap between the two games is probably healthier for sales anyway rather than asking the same audience to buy two Lara Croft games in one year

[Fiend_AI]

Unreal Engine 5 for the new mainline entry should mean a real visual leap over the previous generation of Tomb Raider games

[Electric Brad]

Disappointing for anyone hyped after the reveal trailer, but 2028 giving the team more room can only help the final quality

This is becoming a common pattern, exec casually reveals a delay in an interview about something else entirely, rather than a dedicated announcement

Hope this means Legacy of Atlantis gets the focus and polish it deserves without competing for resources against Catalyst's development
