One of the most influential stealth games ever made is coming back. Push Square reports that Nightdive Studios is remastering Thief: The Dark Project, the 1998 classic, using its KEX Engine at up to 4K and 120 frames per second, with release on 3 December 2026

The package includes the base game, the three extra missions from Thief: Gold, and a brand new campaign called The Tarnished Mirror. The campaign bridges the first game and Thief 2, with a descent into a drowned necropolis inspired by Lovecraft's R'lyeh

The new campaign comes from the team behind the acclaimed fan expansion Thief: The Black Parade, with Nightdive and Eidos-Montréal credited. Other additions include controller support with a weapon wheel and gyro aiming, trophies, a Vault of extras and a mission selector

Digital prices are £24.99 or $29.99, rising to £28.99 or $34.99 for the Deluxe edition, and there is a physical Deluxe Trapezoid edition for £49.99 or $69.99. The store listing also mentions PS4 and Switch versions, and Pure Xbox reports an Xbox release on the same date

Nightdive has an excellent record with remasters such as System Shock, Quake and Turok. Bringing in the Black Parade team to write an official new campaign is a lovely recognition of the fan community. For many players this will be their first chance to experience Garrett's original adventure properly

Will you be returning to The City in December? And should more classic games get new official campaigns from fan creators?
