The old school printed strategy guide thread, did you actually buy one

[SpinState22]

Before online wikis and video walkthroughs existed, thick printed strategy guides were the only real way to get unstuck on a hard game. Did you ever buy one, and was it actually worth the money at the time

[GreenEcho]

Saved up specifically to buy a guide for one game I was completely stuck on, felt like buying actual contraband information

[Shane95]

Borrowed one from a friend and photocopied the pages I needed at the library, definitely not something I'm proud of but it happened

[NatureBoyOwen16]

Some of those guides had genuinely gorgeous full color artwork sections that felt like a bonus art book more than a walkthrough

[NeverQuitRoss81]

Remember a guide having a mistake in it that sent me the completely wrong direction for an entire afternoon

[Slay40]

The map fold outs in some guides were honestly better than anything the actual in game map provided at the time

[Reacher Mitchell]

This thread is a great reminder that getting stuck used to mean real effort to solve rather than just typing a question into a search bar

[SwiftQuarry]

Those guides felt like part of the game itself rather than just help.

Flipping through pages, seeing maps and enemy breakdowns, it added to the experience.

Sometimes you'd read ahead just out of curiosity and spoil yourself a bit

[Reward Dragon]

Some of them were genuinely well made.

Full artwork, developer notes, little bits of lore you wouldn't get in-game.

They doubled as collectibles, not just walkthroughs.

Still have a few sitting on a shelf

[FairDos]

Getting stuck back then forced a different mindset.

You'd try everything before even considering opening the guide.

And even then, you'd skim carefully to avoid spoilers.

It was a slower but more rewarding process.

[ProperJobs]

Certain puzzles felt almost impossible without help.

Some older games didn't explain mechanics clearly at all.

The guide wasn't optional, it was basically a companion piece.

[HeartbreakKidStinger64]

Borrowing a friend's guide was common too.

Pages would be worn out at specific sections where everyone got stuck.

Kind of funny how predictable those trouble spots were.

[StringTheory97]

Magazines filled a similar role before full guides.

Tips, partial walkthroughs, secrets.

Piecing together solutions from different issues was its own challenge.

[Jess_43]

There's something to be said for the physical format.

No alt-tabbing, no distractions.

Just you, the game, and the book.

Felt more focused overall.

[Mason_22]

Some guides went overboard with detail.

Every item, every hidden trigger, every stat explained.

Almost turned the game into a checklist if you followed it too closely

[RicFlair]

On the other hand, some were frustratingly vague.

You'd read a hint and still not quite get it.

Back to wandering around for another hour

[Ruby_50]

Parents buying a guide along with the game felt like a big deal.

Like getting the "complete" version of the experience.

Even if you didn't end up using it much

[NeverQuitZach33]

Some people treated guides as spoilers and avoided them completely.

Others read them cover to cover before even playing.

Two very different approaches to the same thing.

[Fox]

There was also a patience element that's harder to find now.

Spending hours stuck on one section wasn't unusual.

Now most people would look it up in minutes

[Quarry]

Looking back, they were a workaround for limited game design clarity.

Modern games tutorialize everything more clearly.

Guides are less necessary as a result.

[Liam]

Even now, there's a charm to those old guides.

They captured a moment in gaming history where information wasn't instant.

That slower pace gave games a different kind of weight

[Andrew4]

Unlocking secrets without a guide felt incredible though.

That sense of discovery hit harder because it wasn't instantly searchable.

Guides were helpful, but solving things yourself was the real payoff.

[ReplyGuy26]

Multiplayer discussions have kind of replaced them.

Instead of a book, it's forums, videos, and streams.

Same idea, just faster and more interactive.

[Harper48]

Speedrunners still reference old guides sometimes.

They documented mechanics and quirks before everything was datamined.

Interesting how that knowledge still holds up.
