Nintendo's Switch 2 appears to have been jailbroken without any hardware tricks. Nintendo Life reports that a developer called pepsipu has shown a software only exploit, called ns2jb, that runs through the programming game SmileBASIC 4

The exploit works on firmware 23.0.1. It is tethered, which means it has to be run again each time the console is restarted. pepsipu said they used OpenAI's Codex to help develop it

Software exploits are significant because they do not need users to open the console or solder anything. The original Switch was famously cracked through a hardware flaw in its Nvidia chip, which Nintendo could not patch on existing units

Nintendo is very likely to patch this quickly through a firmware update and may pull or change SmileBASIC 4 if needed. Anyone hoping to use the exploit will need to stay on the current firmware

Using an AI coding tool to help find a console exploit is a sign of the times. Homebrew fans will be excited, while Nintendo will be working fast on a fix. It will be interesting to see how long the hole stays open

Will Nintendo patch this quickly? And what do you make of AI being used to find console exploits?
