A new homebrew project lets jailbroken PS5 consoles run Steam games locally. PC Gamer reports that a launcher called Playden, made by developer leolobato and published on GitHub earlier this month, can run titles such as Portal and Left 4 Dead 2

Playden runs games inside a private Windows environment using prospero-win, a PS5 port of Wine. It uses DXVK for Direct3D 11 games and VKD3D-Proton for Direct3D 12. It downloads a game, prepares it, and gives each one its own tile on the PS5 home screen

A Reddit user called Cevap showed Portal running and said the game works as you would expect, although the mouse cursor and the escape menu do not work. Left 4 Dead 2 and others appear on the compatibility list

The launcher needs a real Steam account. The developers warn that Valve does not support third party clients and that any risk to accounts is the user's to accept, though they know of no problems so far. It is an early alpha that will crash, there are no performance figures, and Sony has not responded. It also only works on consoles that have already been jailbroken

Seeing Wine running Steam games on a PS5 is a remarkable technical feat. The PS5's AMD hardware is close to a gaming PC, so it makes sense in principle. Most people will never try it, and with Steam account risks and an alpha label, caution is wise

Would you risk your Steam account to try this? And how long before Sony shuts it down?
