Valve has released a Steam client beta with a big overhaul of achievements. PC Gamer's Shaun Prescott reports that developers can now group achievements into sets, such as mastering a character class or completing a campaign. It is a thoughtful change that should please completionists

The most welcome change is how DLC is handled. Achievements for DLC now sit in their own sets, so buying or skipping DLC no longer lowers a player's 100 percent completion for the base game. Time limited seasonal sets, such as a Halloween event, also stay separate from the base count

There is also a redesigned achievements page that shows overall progress and progress on each achievement in one place. Players can compare achievements with up to three friends at once, a feature PlayStation players have enjoyed for a while

Seventeen games support the new system at launch, including Portal 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Forza Horizon 5, Crusader Kings III, DREDGE, PowerWash Simulator 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Players need to opt into the Steam Client Beta to try it now, and PC Gamer expects a full release in about a month

Completionists have complained for years about DLC ruining their perfect scores, so this is a very welcome fix. Small quality of life changes like this are exactly why many players love Steam. It is good to see Valve still polishing the basics

Do you chase 100 percent achievement completion? And which game would you most like to see support the new system?
