A new video shows over 20 minutes of gameplay from Star Wars: Galactic Racer, captured on a PlayStation 5 Pro, and it looks fast. The game is a run based racer where you speed around the galaxy, earn better gear and race against a cast of Star Wars characters. It launches on 6 October on PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC. For anyone who loved Episode I Racer back in the day, this has been one to watch

The developer is Fuse Games, a studio founded in 2023 by former Criterion Games developers, the people behind Burnout and plenty of Need for Speed games. It is directed by Matt Webster and published by Secret Mode, with input from Lucasfilm Games. That Burnout heritage shows in the footage. It is all about speed, risk and spectacular crashes. Criterion's Burnout games were famous for rewarding risky driving with boost

It is set in the New Republic era after Return of the Jedi. You play as Shade, helping Darius Pax take back his Galactic League from the villain Kestar Bool in the Outer Rim. Familiar faces from The Phantom Menace like Sebulba and Ben Quadinaros turn up too. Vehicles include podracers, landspeeders, speeder bikes and a new class called the skimspeeder

Locations include Tatooine, Jakku, Ando Prime and a couple of new planets. There is an arcade mode with time trials and online racing for up to 12 players. Reviews have started to appear, and GamesRadar's verdict was positive, calling it the most dangerous, satisfying and immersive racing game the reviewer had played. They did mention some downsides, including only six planets, a difficulty spike in the third act and circuits on the same planet blurring together. Lantaana and Sentinel One are among the new locations

The roguelike structure is the bit I am unsure about. The campaign uses branching tour routes where you lose the run if you crash three times or lose your League Token, then you upgrade in the paddock between events. That could keep it fresh or get frustrating fast. Is anyone planning to pick it up next week? And does a roguelike racer appeal to you, or would you rather have a traditional championship mode?
