A homebrew storefront for jailbroken PS5 consoles called Overdrive has been taken down after a reported legal warning from Sony. Tom's Hardware's Jhet Borja reports that it offered more than 1,600 PS4 and PS5 games as free downloads, which makes it a piracy story rather than a homebrew one

Overdrive appeared on GitHub on 9 October. On 12 October, a jailbreak tutorial account posted an installation video on X that drew more than 7.9 million views. A day later the storefront shut down, reportedly after a cease and desist letter from Sony's lawyers. Tom's Hardware notes that the only source for that letter is a post on X, so it is unconfirmed

Within about a day, a fork and a clone of the project appeared on GitHub, bringing it back in another form. That is the familiar pattern with this kind of takedown. Removing one copy often just creates more

The PS5 jailbreak scene has grown quickly since the Relapse jailbreak was released on 29 September. We have covered some of the legitimate homebrew projects, such as emulators and a cloud gaming app. Tom's Hardware expects Sony to be stuck playing whack a mole with the piracy side for some time

Homebrew can be creative and fun, but mass distribution of commercial games is a different matter. It takes money away from the developers who made them, many of whom work at small studios. Sony will no doubt push firmware updates to close the jailbreak, and anyone using these tools risks being banned from online services

Do you think Sony can contain the PS5 jailbreak? And where do you draw the line between homebrew and piracy?
