Shigeru Miyamoto has received one of Japan's highest honours. Nintendo Life reports that the creator of Mario and Zelda has been named a recipient of the Order of Culture, making him the first video game developer to receive it

The Order of Culture recognises people who have made outstanding contributions to Japanese culture in fields such as art, literature and science. Miyamoto will be presented with the award on 3 November, Culture Day in Japan

In a typically modest response, Miyamoto said he was a little embarrassed by the honour. He stressed that games are made by many people, not one creator, and shared the credit with the teams he has worked with

Miyamoto joined Nintendo in 1977 and went on to create Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda and many more. His influence on game design is impossible to overstate, and he helped shape the industry we know today

This is a huge moment for games as a form of culture, not only for Miyamoto. Recognition at this level puts game design alongside the traditional arts. Nobody deserves to be the first more than him

What is your favourite Miyamoto game? And is this a turning point for how games are seen as culture?
