Serious Sam is going back to its roots. Gematsu's Sal Romano reports that Devolver Digital and Croteam have announced Serious Sam: The Third Encounter for PC on Steam

The game is a direct continuation of 2002's The Second Encounter. The announcement put it clearly: not a prequel, not a side story, but a true continuation. That will please fans who have waited more than two decades for the story to pick up

It is still in early development, with no release date or price yet. The Steam page promises pure arcade first person shooter action, the classic arsenal plus new weapons, and both solo and co-op play. A teaser trailer and the first screenshots came with the announcement

PC Gamer counts it as the seventh mainline Serious Sam game, and links the return to a classic style with the recent Shatterverse spin off

Serious Sam has always been about huge waves of enemies, big guns and silly humour, and that formula still works brilliantly. Retro style shooters have had a revival in recent years, so the timing is good. Co-op chaos with friends is exactly what the series does best

Did you play The First and Second Encounter? And are retro style shooters better than modern ones?
