The ambitious retro style shooter Selaco is getting a huge expansion. PC Gamer reports that developer Altered Orbit Studios will release Selaco: The Machines of War, the second of three planned chapters, on 13 November

The update adds 19 new campaign maps, which the studio says means six to eight hours of extra content, and it calls the update an absolute behemoth. It also adds story elements, a voice for the protagonist, and a persistent machine that hunts the player throughout the game

New weapons include a minigun and a heavy machine gun that fires explosions. There are deployable mini turrets and sentinel drones, large disposable heavy weapons placed around battlefields, and enemy AI rewritten for smarter tactics, rallying and patrols

Chapter one has also been overhauled with improved set pieces, and there are new lighting and particle effects, navigation, enemy voice lines, controls and music. Old saves will not carry over, but players can start chapter two directly without replaying the reworked first chapter

Selaco won a lot of fans for combining old school shooter design with modern effects and clever enemies. Doubling the game's size in a single update is generous. A persistent hunter sounds like a great way to keep tension high

Have you played Selaco? And do you prefer big free updates or paid expansions?

That machine hunting you throughout the game sounds like Mr X from Resident Evil 2. Persistent threats create great tension. Hopefully it is scary rather than annoying. Smarter enemies make every encounter different. Replay value goes way up
