Sega is temporarily pulling the new version of Total War: Shogun 2 from sale, just two days after its launch on 13 October. Kotaku's John Walker reports that the decision follows a wave of negative Steam reviews, which we discussed earlier this week. Sega has also said it will bring back the original game, which had been removed from the store

Players had complained about graphical problems, old and new bugs, a poor interface and undeclared AI upscaling of in game art. Kotaku says the upscaling enlarged small, blurry original artwork with farcical results, and points out that the Steam page lacked Valve's required AI disclosure. At the time of writing, the game had 17 percent positive reviews out of nearly 2,000

In a statement on X, Sega said the release had fallen short of players' expectations and its own standards. It is working with platform holders to remove the game while it investigates with developer Creative Assembly. People who have already bought it will keep access

The statement does not mention AI directly, which is a slightly awkward omission given how central it was to the complaints. Kotaku has asked Sega and Creative Assembly for more explanation

Pulling a game this quickly is unusual, but it is the right decision. Restoring the original Shogun 2 was what many fans asked for, and admitting the release fell short shows Sega is listening. If Creative Assembly fixes the problems properly, the remake could still get a second chance

Was pulling the game the right call? And would you give a fixed version another try?

Normal is overrated
