Rockstar has hinted that fans will not have to wait another eight years for its next game after Grand Theft Auto 6. VGC's Chris Scullion reports that studio heads Phil Hooker and Aaron Garbut discussed it in an interview. GTA 6, out on 19 November, is Rockstar's first major new single player release since Red Dead Redemption 2 in October 2018

Hooker explained that the engine, tools and team built for GTA 6 will let the studio work faster. He said Rockstar can now go more sideways than upwards, meaning it can focus on creating content rather than building new technology from the ground up

Garbut said Rockstar foundationally changed a lot for GTA 6 and will not tear that work down now that it is finished. He added that the game reflects 30 years of studio experience, and that long serving staff with shared knowledge help shorten development

The interview drew comparisons with GTA: Vice City, which arrived just a year after GTA 3 because the groundwork was already in place. VGC is careful to stress that nobody is suggesting anything that fast this time. Rockstar did not say what its next project is, although many fans are hoping for a new Red Dead

Eight years between major releases is a long time, even for a studio of Rockstar's reputation. Hearing that the next gap should be shorter is welcome news. Building strong foundations and then reusing them is exactly how studios get faster

What would you like Rockstar to make next? And how long do you think the wait will be?
