The next Xbox could be very expensive. VGC's Andy Robinson reports on a Fortune profile of Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma, which includes some striking claims about Microsoft's hardware plans

The next generation console, Project Helix, is reportedly due by the holiday season of 2028. Internal projections reportedly put its price between 1,200 and 1,800 dollars, unless Microsoft decides to subsidise the cost

A next generation handheld is reportedly planned for holiday 2027. Fortune says Xbox clashed with the Windows leadership over whether it should run a trimmed down version of Windows Home or Xbox's own software. Microsoft also reportedly plans a la carte Game Pass add ons, such as cloud gaming and multiplayer

Microsoft has not confirmed any of this. For context, Series X and S prices recently rose by up to 150 dollars, and analyst Joost van Dreunen has said that north of a thousand dollars is the floor for next generation consoles. Memory shortages linked to AI data centres are pushing costs up across the industry, as we discussed with the PS6 reports

A console costing up to 1,800 dollars would be priced like a high end gaming PC. That would change who buys consoles completely. Microsoft may decide that the PC like price fits its plans to blur the line between Xbox and Windows

Would you pay 1,200 dollars or more for a new Xbox? And is the traditional console model coming to an end?
