A well known hardware leaker has claimed that memory and storage for the PlayStation 6 cost more than 680 dollars per console. VGC's Andy Robinson reports that the claim came from KeplerL2, who has a good track record with AMD hardware leaks. They added that the figure should fall once Sony finalises the design

The background is a severe shortage of memory and storage, driven by enormous demand from AI data centres. It has already hit current consoles. The PS5 now costs more than 50 percent above its launch price, and the PS5 Pro sits at 899 dollars after two price rises in a year

Analysts are bracing for an expensive next generation. Aldora chief executive Joost van Dreunen expects new consoles in 2028 at prices north of a thousand dollars. Newzoo's Manu Rosier is a little more optimistic, expecting base models to stay under 999 dollars. Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma has also said memory costs will affect Project Helix

Reports once suggested the PS6 could arrive as early as 2027. If component costs stay high, Sony may prefer to wait rather than launch at a price few people will pay. Memory alone costing that much leaves very little room for everything else

This is a worrying trend for console gaming. Consoles have always been the affordable way to play big games, and a thousand dollar machine changes that. Hopefully the shortage eases before the next generation arrives

Would you pay a thousand dollars for a PS6? And should Sony delay the next generation if costs stay this high?

Be excellent to each other
