Sony's latest PS5 update may have closed a serious security hole. Kotaku's Lewis Parker reports that firmware 14.20 appears to patch an exploit discovered by a hacker known as Ark Sama, who has been teasing it for nearly a year

The exploit allowed a PS5 to run fake package files natively. In practice, that means pirated games could run without the workarounds current methods need, which often hurt performance. That is why the hacker was reluctant to release it

Ark Sama reported it through Sony's HackerOne bug bounty programme and will be paid for the discovery. They had promised to publish details only once Sony fixed it, which HackerOne's rules allow after a patch is released

Users on the PS5 jailbreak community on Reddit are celebrating, because the exploit can now be released. It will work on any console that has not updated to firmware 14.20, so anyone wanting to use it will need to avoid updating

Responsible disclosure through a bug bounty is the right approach, even for exploits like this. Sony patching before GTA 6 arrives makes sense too. Console security is a constant cat and mouse game

Should hackers release exploits after they are patched? And do bug bounties make consoles more secure?
