The outage landed at a particularly awkward moment given Sony's recent announcement that it will stop releasing new PlayStation games on physical discs starting January 2028, with new titles instead shipping as a box containing a digital code. That detail was not lost on frustrated players, one of whom posted that they could still play their disc based games throughout the entire outage while anything digital only remained completely locked
