Over 40% of people cancelling Game Pass or PS Plus now blame rising costs

[CollapseState87]

New Circana survey data shared by analyst Mat Piscatella found that more than 40 percent of US players cancelling Xbox Game Pass Essential or PlayStation Plus Essential now cite cost as their primary reason, up from 37 percent in the first quarter of the year. Nintendo Switch Online saw an even sharper jump, with 50 percent of recent cancellers blaming cost compared to 40 percent earlier in 2026. Piscatella stressed the data doesn't show more people cancelling overall, only that affordability has become a stronger reason among those who do

The shift follows a string of price increases across the industry, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate now costs 22.99 dollars a month after Microsoft attempted and then partially paused a steeper 50 percent hike in late 2025, while PlayStation Plus raised prices earlier in 2026. Nintendo Switch Online has held its pricing steady in most regions, making it the only major service to avoid a hike this year despite still seeing the largest jump in cost-cited cancellations

Microsoft has responded by quietly offering discounted annual rates to select lapsed subscribers, as low as 16.09 dollars a month for Game Pass Ultimate, in an apparent effort to win back people who left specifically over price. Curious what people think is actually driving this shift, genuine household budget pressure from broader inflation, subscription fatigue after years of stacking multiple monthly services, or specifically the scale of these particular price increases outpacing what players feel the value is actually worth

Nintendo Switch Online holding its price steady while still seeing the biggest jump in cost-cited cancellations is genuinely counterintuitive, suggests broader subscription fatigue playing a real role beyond just that one service's own pricing

Microsoft quietly offering discounted win-back rates while publicly maintaining the higher standard price is a smart but slightly cynical retention strategy, rewards people specifically for already leaving rather than loyal existing subscribers

This tracks with broader subscription fatigue across streaming video and music too, gaming subscriptions are clearly just one more line item people are re-evaluating amid genuinely tighter household budgets generally

Worth remembering value perception matters as much as raw price, a service feels worth it when you're actually using it regularly, and huge backlogs of unplayed included games probably compound the sense that the subscription isn't paying for itself

Curious how this actually affects each company's long term strategy, does this data push toward moderating future price increases, or toward doubling down on exclusive content specifically to justify the higher cost to subscribers

The distinction Piscatella makes, more people blaming cost versus more people cancelling overall, is an important nuance that a lot of the surrounding headline coverage seems to be glossing over
