Activision has confirmed that next year's Call of Duty will begin a new sub series, rather than continuing Modern Warfare or Black Ops. GamesRadar's Jordan Gerblick reports that Call of Duty marketing lead Tyler Bahl explained the decision to The Game Business. It is the first brand new sub series since Vanguard in 2021

Bahl said the change follows player feedback that the community was not looking for more of those series and wanted a change in tone. He said the groundwork for the new series is already in place, but gave no name, setting or other details

Meanwhile, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on 23 October on PS5, Xbox Series X, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. It is the first Call of Duty on a Nintendo platform since Ghosts in 2013, which is a notable return for the series. Its campaign is set partly on the Korean Peninsula, with New York, Paris and Mumbai also confirmed as locations

New sub series have had mixed results in the past. Vanguard, set in the Second World War, was not as successful as Activision hoped. But the long running Modern Warfare and Black Ops series have also faced fatigue, so trying something new could refresh the franchise

Listening to player feedback and taking a creative risk is encouraging. Call of Duty is huge, but even huge series need fresh ideas to stay exciting. The challenge will be finding a setting and tone that feels new without losing what fans love

What setting would you like the new sub series to use? And are you playing Modern Warfare 4 on Switch 2?
