Minecraft is getting The Sift, its first new dimension in over 14 years

Big news from Minecraft Live. Mojang has announced The Sift, a brand new dimension joining the Overworld, the Nether and the End. It is the first entirely new dimension the game has had in over 14 years, which is a huge deal for a game this size. Fans have been asking for something like this for years. It is coming to both Java and Bedrock editions in 2027, although no exact date has been given yet

From what has been shown, The Sift looks very different from anything else in the game. Mojang describes it as beautiful, vibrant and teeming with souls, with a neon mix of blue and pink colours. It will have its own environments, inhabitants, dangers and gameplay. A new hostile mob was revealed during the show, but details beyond that are fairly thin for now

The interesting twist is how people can get a taste of it early. Minecraft Dungeons 2 launches on September 29 and The Sift is built into its campaign, in a story about helping villagers relocate to Bravehaven while fighting soul corruption. So the spin off acts as a kind of introduction before the dimension arrives in the main game. It is a clever bit of cross promotion, and a sensible way to test the look and lore with players

A new dimension is a much bigger undertaking than a normal biome update. The Nether and the End each came with their own progression, materials and bosses, so expectations will be sky high. If The Sift follows that pattern, it could change how people play the late game. Mojang has taken its time with updates recently, which suggests it wants to get this one right
