Insomniac Games has confirmed that Marvel's Wolverine will run at 60 frames per second with ray tracing enabled on a standard base PS5, and for the first time in the studio's history that performance mode is the default rather than something players have to switch into manually

This is a genuine shift from how Insomniac has handled its previous Marvel games, both Spider-Man titles shipped with separate fidelity and performance modes, and ray tracing in performance mode was typically described as something added late in development or patched in after launch rather than built in from the start

Senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed described the approach directly, saying the team knew early on it wanted 60fps working on the base PS5 in performance mode and built the game around that target from the beginning, while head of technology Mike Fitzgerald framed it as delivering the fidelity the PS5 should have had all along rather than treating ray traced performance mode as a bonus feature bolted on afterward

Wolverine is a notably different kind of game from Insomniac's open world Spider-Man titles, it is a linear action adventure following an original story about Logan set before the X-Men exist, and the studio has said it invested heavily in reactive foliage and wind systems for the wilderness settings in Canada and Madripoor, plus destructible environments where most props react physically when damaged

Achieving stable 60fps with ray tracing as a default rather than an optional toggle is a meaningful technical claim for a game this visually ambitious, and it says something about how far PS5 optimization techniques have matured since launch, developers are squeezing more out of the same hardware years into the console's life cycle rather than needing new hardware generations to hit these targets

The game launches on PS5 on September 15, and given Insomniac's track record of pushing Sony's hardware hard across multiple console generations, this claim is worth taking seriously, though as always with pre release performance claims the real test comes once players get hands on time and independent digital foundry style analysis after launch

VAR can do one

Hidden Sookie

Ray traced 60fps as the default instead of a toggle is a genuinely big deal if it holds up under real world testing

Charlotte

Insomniac has a strong track record on optimization though, they have consistently pushed PS5 hardware harder than most other studios

Curious how this compares once PS5 Pro numbers come out, would expect an even bigger jump there

Aura49

Fair, but Insomniac specifically has earned some benefit of the doubt given their history with the Spider-Man games

AlphaPhil33

Probably higher resolution or extra effects on Pro rather than a huge fps difference if the base target is already 60 with ray tracing

Apogee Seb

Building the game around 60fps from day one instead of bolting ray tracing on late is exactly the right approach honestly
Posted from a machine that definitely needs a clean install

Enterprise

Makes sense if 60fps with ray tracing is genuinely the default, why bother offering a lesser fidelity mode nobody would want to switch to

BiscuitTin

No fidelity mode mentioned this time around, seems like they are just fully committing to performance as the only real option

SwiftQuarry

Always a little skeptical of pre release performance claims until independent analysis confirms it after launch

September 15 release is coming up fast, excited to see how this actually plays once reviewers get their hands on it
