Jagex has cancelled RuneScape Reignited, a planned fresh start for new and returning players, less than two weeks after announcing it. PC Gamer's Andy Chalk reports that the idea was to launch separate servers where everyone would begin from scratch. It is a different project from the RuneScape 4 announcement we discussed recently

Players had several objections. They worried the plan would split the community, it limited how characters could interact across servers, and it needed its own separate subscription. A few days after the reveal, Jagex apologised and said it was considering major changes

Now the whole plan has been dropped. Associate creative director Ryan Philpott, known as Mod Ryan, wrote that Jagex missed the mark and is not moving forward with it. He said the aim is still to bring in new and returning players without harming the existing community

Instead, Jagex will run a 10 day free trial with full access from 2 December, and the 2027 roadmap stays the same. PC Gamer notes that Jagex has backed down quickly before, dropping a battle pass in 2023 and Treasure Hunter microtransactions in 2025. Listening to the community seems to be part of the studio's culture

Admitting a mistake and changing course quickly is a good sign. A free trial with full access is a much simpler way to welcome new players without dividing anyone. RuneScape's community clearly cares deeply about the game, and Jagex seems to respect that

Was cancelling Reignited the right call? And will a 10 day free trial bring back lapsed players?

Have you tried turning it off and on again?
