The store that champions DRM free gaming would like to offer boxes on shelves again. PC Gamer reports that Marcin Paczynski, GOG's senior business development and partnerships manager, told GamesRadar he would like GOG to sell physical copies of games

He described the ideal experience simply: you click on the game you want a physical copy of, order it and it arrives. He said the idea has been discussed inside the company for years and he is not ruling it out, although no plans have been announced

Paczynski called it a very, very complicated thing, pointing to logistics and storage. Physical distribution is a very different business from running a digital store

The article notes alternatives in the meantime, including the Big Box Collection project, which lets people print replica game boxes, and buying used physical copies. Physical copies can help preserve older games at risk of disappearing, they look good on shelves and they act as a backup if a hard drive fails

GOG's whole identity is about owning your games, so physical copies would fit its brand well. Print on demand services might make it more realistic than it once was. With some console makers moving away from discs, a PC store going the other way would be a nice contrast

Would you buy physical PC games from GOG? And how important is physical media for game preservation?
