The Coalition has confirmed that Gears of War: E-Day was hit by distributed denial of service attacks over the weekend. Kotaku reports that the studio posted on the Gears Community account on X late on Sunday night. It said the attacks were behind the problems players had logging in and staying connected to the newly launched game

Players had reported intermittent disconnects, failed logins and other disruptions. A DDoS attack works by flooding servers with requests until real users cannot get through. Kotaku points out that such attacks are crude, and usually easy to block once they are spotted. The studio said it had the problem under control within a few hours and is continuing to monitor and mitigate the activity

The timing is awkward for Microsoft. E-Day is one of its biggest releases of 2026, and estimates suggest first week sales were below expectations. Figures cited in the article put sales at around 250,000, including about 62,000 on Xbox, with an estimated 1.7 million people playing through Game Pass. Those are estimates rather than official numbers, so they should be treated with care

The attackers have not been identified. Launch weekends are a common target for this kind of disruption, because that is when servers are busiest and players are most eager to get online. The quick response from The Coalition suggests its online team was well prepared

It is frustrating for players who wanted to dive straight into multiplayer. But a few hours of disruption is far better than the days long outages some launches have suffered. Hopefully the rest of the launch period goes smoothly

Did the attacks affect your launch weekend? And how do you think studios should prepare for this kind of disruption?

Players affected over the weekend deserve a small in game gift. Something cosmetic would be a nice gesture

It costs little and builds goodwill. Plenty of studios have done that before

A double XP weekend would also go down well. Players love those
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Launch weekend is always the riskiest time for online games. Studios should plan for attacks as well as for high demand

Load testing and DDoS protection need to be part of every launch plan. Players never see that work when it goes well. Big launches attract attention of all kinds. Preparation is the only defence

Microsoft runs one of the world's biggest cloud platforms. If anyone can absorb a DDoS attack, it should be them

Perhaps the game's own servers had a weak point that has now been fixed. Either way, the response was quick. Azure's protection services are well regarded
