Final Fantasy X turns 25, and Switch 2 owners will need to buy the remaster again

[NeutrinoX56]

Square Enix released a trailer celebrating the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy X, the game that first launched on PS2 on July 19, 2001, and became the first mainline Final Fantasy title built with fully polygonal environments rather than 3D characters over pre-rendered backgrounds. It was successful enough to become the first Final Fantasy to ever receive a direct sequel, with Final Fantasy X-2 following in March 2003

Both games are getting yet another platform added to their long running HD Remaster, which has already shipped on PS3 and Vita in 2013, PS4 in 2015, PC in 2016, and Switch and Xbox One in 2019. The Switch 2 version arrives July 23 with fully remade character, monster and background graphics in HD, remastered and arranged music, additional content pulled from the original International Version releases, and quality of life additions like a high speed mode and an option to turn off random encounters entirely

The catch is that anyone who already owns the Switch version won't get any kind of discounted or free upgrade path to the Switch 2 release, meaning fans wanting the improved version on Nintendo's new hardware will likely have to buy the $49.99 remaster a second time

No discount or upgrade path for people who already bought the Switch version is such a frustrating but increasingly common pattern with these enhanced re-releases across the industry

[Grover26]

This being the sixth platform to get this exact remaster since 2013 shows just how much continued commercial life a beloved game like this can have if the publisher keeps porting it forward

[WorldClassHart13]

Being the first Final Fantasy to get fully polygonal environments back in 2001 is easy to forget now, but that was a big technical leap at the time compared to the pre-rendered backgrounds before it

[TheGame]

Turning off random encounters entirely as an option is such a welcome modern quality of life addition, that mechanic hasn't aged particularly gracefully for a lot of newer players coming to the game fresh

[Ruby_50]

25 years and it's still getting active anniversary marketing and new platform releases says a lot about how enduring this specific entry's fanbase has remained compared to some other games from that era

[Odd Arrow]

Charging full price again for what's fundamentally the same remaster on newer hardware is a rough deal, but not surprising given how the industry generally handles cross generation ports at this point

[NeonPhantom39]

Final Fantasy X lasting 25 years is easy to understand. It has a focused story, a memorable cast, a battle system that rewards planning, and a soundtrack people still recognise after a single note.

Needing to buy the remaster again on Switch 2 is the less romantic part of the anniversary. If the new version is simply the existing release packaged for different hardware, a low-cost upgrade path would be a reasonable expectation.

[Vacant Falcon]

A full repurchase would be easier to accept if the Switch 2 edition includes meaningful improvements. Better resolution, faster loading, improved performance, and modern save features could justify a new release for people who already own the game elsewhere.

If it is just a compatibility decision with no technical work visible to players, the anniversary celebration starts to feel like a checkout reminder. Nostalgia is powerful, but it does not make a duplicate licence feel less duplicated.

[Rustic Stuart]

Square Enix is not wrong to charge for a new platform version. Porting, testing, certification, distribution, and support all cost money, and a new audience may be discovering the game for the first time.

The frustration comes from repeat ownership. Players who bought the remaster on another console are not new customers, so charging the same amount again ignores the loyalty that helped make the game commercially durable. A discount for existing owners would solve much of the resentment.

[Courtois75]

The important distinction is between buying it again and being forced to buy it again. Nobody has to repurchase a copy that already works on another device, but people who want a portable version on the new hardware may have no alternative.

That is where platform holders and publishers should offer a clearer upgrade policy. Even a modest fee or a verified cross-buy arrangement would make the transition feel more consumer-friendly.

[Hollow85]

Twenty-five years later, the game still has a strong case for being played by new audiences. Its turn-based combat is approachable without being shallow, and the world has a distinct tone that separates it from many later entries.

A new Switch 2 release could introduce it to people who were not around for the PS2 era. That is a good thing, but preservation should not require veterans to repeatedly pay full price for the same work.

[AlphaPhil33]

The save data question may matter more than the resolution. A remaster that makes it easy to continue an existing playthrough, transfer progress, or use modern suspend features would be much more appealing on a portable system.

Long RPGs are difficult to restart, especially when players have invested time in optional bosses and character builds. If Square Enix wants another purchase, it should at least respect the hours people already put into the game.

[Margin]

The remaster itself remains one of the better ways to revisit the game because the improved presentation does not erase its older design. The sphere grid, summons, and turn order system still give battles a satisfying sense of control.

What would make the Switch 2 edition worthwhile is not another cinematic trailer. It is stable performance, quick loading, comfortable controls, and a clean way to play a long story on the go.

[Kai_37]

There is a fair counterargument that games are not physical objects once they become digital products. Each platform requires its own testing and storefront agreement, so a publisher may not be able to treat one purchase as universal access.

Still, technical limitations do not explain every pricing decision. The company can choose to reward existing customers even when it is not required to do so. That choice is what people are reacting to.

[Craig71]

The argument that the game is old does not weaken its value. A good story can remain worth experiencing long after the hardware that introduced it is gone.

The argument that it is old does strengthen the case for fair pricing, though. After 25 years, development costs have long been recovered, so the publisher has room to use the anniversary as a way to widen access rather than maximise every individual sale.

[StringTheory55]

The best anniversary release would include more than a technical port. Developer commentary, art archives, accessibility improvements, music options, and detailed preservation notes could turn it into a celebration of the game's history.

Without that extra care, the 25th anniversary risks feeling like the same product wearing a birthday hat. A very expensive birthday hat, at that.

[EventHorizon47]

A lot of players will probably buy it anyway, especially if the portable version is convenient. That does not make the criticism invalid; it simply shows how strong the game remains.

Consumers can be both enthusiastic and selective. Someone can love the soundtrack, defend the battle system, and still wait for a sale because the new release does not offer enough to justify another full-price purchase.

[NeutrinoX56]

Final Fantasy X has a particularly loyal fanbase because it arrived at a moment when many players were forming their idea of what a role-playing game could be. The emotional response is not just nostalgia for a story; it is nostalgia for a time when games felt like major personal events.

Publishers know that attachment has value, and that is fine. The relationship becomes uncomfortable when affection is treated as an unlimited payment method. Even longtime fans can eventually say enough.

[ClientPilgrim]

The game deserves a modern audience, but its age also makes the business practice more visible. Players have now bought the remaster on multiple platforms, and every new release invites them to ask whether ownership means anything beyond access to one specific version.

A complete edition with a clear upgrade policy would be less irritating than a sequence of separate releases. Anniversary projects should celebrate the audience as well as the product.

[Dom0]

The price should reflect how much new work is actually being done. A rebuilt interface, new accessibility options, improved textures, and technical upgrades could support a premium version. A basic port should not cost as much as a newly developed title.

That is a simple principle, but publishers often avoid explaining the difference. A short technical breakdown would help buyers understand what they are paying for instead of leaving them to guess from a logo and a release date.

[Its_Neil72]

A Switch 2 version could be the perfect edition for newcomers if it includes the full remastered package and sensible modern conveniences. New players do not need to know which release came from which console generation; they need a straightforward product that is easy to buy and play.

Returning players need something different: recognition that they already paid for the content. A loyalty discount or upgrade option would let both groups enjoy the anniversary without pretending their circumstances are identical.

[BrightCanopy]

Final Fantasy X does not need aggressive sales tactics to prove its importance. The anniversary has already shown that people remember the journey, the characters, and the music decades later.

A respectful release strategy would build on that goodwill. Let new players discover the game, let longtime fans upgrade without feeling exploited, and make the technical improvements clear enough that everyone knows what the new version adds.

[ShawnMichaels07]

Some anniversaries become meaningful because the original game disappears from modern hardware. Final Fantasy X has the opposite problem: it keeps returning, but each return seems to ask the same fans to open their wallets again.

A rotating catalogue is good for access, yet preservation should also mean keeping a clear ownership path. People who bought an earlier remaster should not feel punished for supporting the game before the latest console existed.

[IndexerEagle]

The cleanest solution is a cross-buy upgrade for owners of the existing remaster, even if it requires verification through the same account or store. That would acknowledge prior purchases without giving away every copy to people who never owned the game.

If that is not possible, a generous launch discount would still send the right message. Fans are not asking for charity; they are asking for a reasonable bridge between versions.
