DRM company Denuvo has asked a US court for permission to subpoena Discord, Valve and Reddit to identify a game cracker it is suing, VGC reports. Denuvo sued a user known as "voices38" last month, alleging they have released cracks for nearly 30 games. The complaint lists 26 titles, including Resident Evil Requiem, Stellar Blade and Hogwarts Legacy. It does not name the person, but it lists their Discord user ID, their Reddit account and seven Steam accounts

The request was filed with the US District Court for the Northern District of California. Denuvo says the subpoenas would be used "solely to determine [the] defendant's true identity." The company first asked the three platforms for the information without a court order. Discord did not reply, while Valve and Reddit said their privacy policies barred sharing it without legal backing

Separately, VGC cites Tom's Hardware reporting that a cracking group called DenuvOwO has disbanded, reportedly because of concerns about the case. That suggests the lawsuit is already having an effect, whatever the final outcome. Cracking groups usually rely on anonymity, so the threat of being identified is a powerful deterrent

Denuvo remains unpopular with many PC players, who complain that its anti-tamper software hurts game performance. Publishers argue it protects sales during the crucial first weeks after launch. The article also mentions a bypass released late last year that installs a kernel level driver, which raises security concerns of its own. It is an ongoing arms race with no clear winner

Should platforms hand over user details to companies like Denuvo? And does DRM do more harm than good for paying customers?
