The PHP security crisis has now hit a major fighting game. Video Games Chronicle reports that Capcom has temporarily removed Street Fighter 5 from sale and shut down its online features and servers while it deals with a PHP security issue

The problem stems from critical PHP vulnerabilities disclosed last week, which were found with the help of AI and forced many websites offline while they were patched. Capcom says the PS4 and Steam versions of the game are potentially vulnerable

Sales on the PlayStation Store and Steam are being suspended in stages until a fix is ready. Capcom first flagged emergency maintenance on X last Wednesday, and a Steam notice on Friday cited security enhancements related to the PHP programming language. On 27 October, the company confirmed the game remains offline and delisted

Capcom said content that requires online features is currently unavailable and apologised for the inconvenience. Owners can still play offline modes, but no date has been given for restoring online play

It is a striking example of how a bug in a widely used programming language can ripple into games. Street Fighter 5 still has players, even with Street Fighter 6 available. Taking it offline was the responsible choice until a fix is ready

Are you surprised a fighting game relies on PHP? And how long do you think it will take Capcom to restore online play?
