Digital sales, bundles, subscriptions and weekly freebies have created a modern problem for gamers. Many of us own hundreds of games that we have never played, or played for ten minutes before moving on. Steam libraries in particular can grow to frightening sizes, filled with games bought on a whim during a sale. The backlog becomes a source of guilt, amusement or simply denial

There are many reasons the pile grows. Sales make games so cheap that buying feels harmless. Bundles include a few games you want and many you do not. Life gets busier, and long games feel daunting. Some people also enjoy collecting and browsing their library more than playing what is in it

I checked my Steam library before writing this post. I own three hundred and twelve games, and I have never launched one hundred and eighty of them. Some were free, some came in bundles and some I bought fully intending to play that weekend. I have no regrets, only shame

Some people tackle their backlog with strict rules, like no new purchases until they finish three games. Others use websites to track and rate their pile. Some declare backlog bankruptcy, accept that they will never play most of it and move on. All approaches are welcome here

How many unplayed games do you own? And do you have a plan to tackle them, or have you given up?

Sales are the enemy. Seventy five percent off makes anything seem like a bargain, even a game I will never enjoy. I now wait twenty four hours before buying anything in a sale

Wishlists help too. If a game is not on my wishlist before the sale, I do not buy it
