Are remasters and remakes crowding out original games?

[NightCrawler33]

I was scrolling through upcoming release lists recently and it struck me how many of the biggest entries were not new ideas at all, they were remasters, remakes or direct sequels to games that are already twenty or thirty years old. That is not automatically a bad thing, since some of those games genuinely deserve a modern audience. But the sheer volume of it made me wonder whether the industry has quietly become more risk averse than it used to be

The business logic behind this is obvious once you actually think about it from a studio's perspective rather than a player's perspective. A remaster of something with an established, proven fanbase is a far safer bet than funding an entirely new idea with an unknown audience, especially now that development budgets have ballooned to a level that makes any single failure genuinely dangerous for a studio. Nobody wants to be the executive who greenlit the expensive flop nobody asked for

Where I think this genuinely costs players something is discovery, the specific joy of stumbling into a completely new world or mechanic you had no expectations about walking in. A remaster can be excellent, but it is fundamentally a known quantity wearing a new coat of paint, and that is a different experience from genuine surprise. I worry that an entire generation of players is growing up with far fewer of those genuinely unexpected discovery moments than previous generations had

At the same time I do not want to be unfair to remasters specifically, because some of them are doing real, valuable work rather than just cashing in on nostalgia. an excellent older game that was held back by clunky controls or dated technical limitations can become something a whole new audience actually enjoys once those barriers are properly removed. That is a legitimate service to preservation, not purely a cynical cash grab, even if some individual releases clearly lean more cynical than others

Where I land is that both things are simultaneously true and neither cancels the other out. Remasters genuinely preserve and improve access to good older games, and the industry is also genuinely becoming more conservative and sequel heavy than it used to be, and I do not think celebrating the first thing means you have to ignore the second thing entirely

I am curious whether the people who actually play more than I currently manage to think this perception is accurate or whether it is just a symptom of getting older and noticing the pattern more now. Does the current release slate feel meaningfully more remake heavy than five or ten years ago to you, or has gaming always leaned on nostalgia this much and I am only just noticing it now?

[Di46]

I think the pattern is real but I want to add a specific detail people usually miss, which is that a lot of genuinely original games still exist, they just do not get the same marketing budget as the big remasters. Smaller and independent studios are still taking real creative risks constantly, it is specifically the largest publishers who have become more conservative with their biggest budget releases

So I would slightly reframe the question, because it is not that originality has disappeared from gaming as a whole. It is that the very top of the budget scale has become risk averse while genuine originality has quietly migrated toward smaller studios with smaller budgets and smaller marketing reach

[Freddy95]

My honest pushback is that this complaint has existed in every single generation of gaming I can personally remember, and I am genuinely sceptical it is actually getting meaningfully worse rather than just feeling that way from where I currently sit. Sequels and cash grabs were extremely common decades ago too, we just remember the good original games from that era and quietly forget the forgettable sequels that filled up the rest of the shelves

I think nostalgia genuinely distorts this kind of comparison more than people realise. We compare today's full unfiltered release slate against a heavily curated memory of only the best things from decades past, and that is not actually a fair comparison at all

[WWEPete45]

I want to defend remasters specifically with a personal example, because a recent one genuinely introduced me to a game I had completely missed the first time around and would almost certainly never have gone back to play in its original dated form. Without that remaster existing at all, that entire experience simply would not have happened for me as a player

So while I take the broader risk aversion point seriously, I do think we should be careful not to undervalue how many players are actually being introduced to genuinely great older games for the very first time through exactly this mechanism. Rather than assuming everyone playing a remaster already played the original years ago

[Flash79]

Genuine question for people who actually work in the industry or follow it closely, because I only see the finished releases from the outside. Is the shift toward remasters and safe sequels really being driven mainly by rising development costs specifically, or is it more about how publishers currently perceive audience risk tolerance and marketing efficiency around already known titles

I ask because those would actually suggest quite different long term trajectories for the industry. And I genuinely do not know enough about the internal decision making to have a confident opinion on which factor is actually driving this pattern the most

[Joel96]

On that question above, from what I have picked up following industry reporting, I think it is genuinely both factors reinforcing each other rather than one clearly dominant cause. Rising costs alone would just mean fewer total games released, but the specific tilt toward remasters and sequels over new original ideas is much more about marketing efficiency and known audience size than about raw development cost pressure by itself

A known franchise essentially arrives with a built in marketing campaign already baked into decades of existing brand recognition. That is an advantage a brand new original idea simply cannot replicate, no matter how good the actual game itself turns out to be on release

[Slay40]

I want to push back on the framing that this is purely a negative development for players specifically, because preservation genuinely matters and a lot of older games were becoming functionally unplayable on current hardware before these remasters started properly rescuing them. Without this current wave, some genuinely excellent games would have simply been lost to obsolete technology within another decade or two

So I see this less as originality being crowded out and more as a necessary preservation effort happening at the exact same moment as a separate, unrelated trend toward corporate risk aversion. And I think the thread is slightly conflating two different phenomena that just happen to be occurring together

[Diane82]

My take is a bit more cynical than most of this thread, because I think the nostalgia angle is being deliberately and quite cleverly exploited by marketing teams who have realised that adults with genuine disposable income specifically respond very strongly to their own childhood memories. It is not really about preservation as a primary goal at all, preservation is simply the convenient justification wrapped around a very calculated business strategy

I do not think that makes every individual remaster inherently bad or worthless, but I think we should be honest with ourselves about which motive is actually primary here. And I suspect it is rarely genuine artistic preservation driving these specific corporate decisions

[CollapseState]

I think the discovery point in the original post is the most important part of this whole discussion and deserves more attention than it is getting in these replies. I distinctly remember specific games from my childhood that completely reshaped what I even thought games could be, purely because I had absolutely zero prior expectations walking in

I do worry that an entire generation growing up primarily on remasters, familiar sequels and known franchises might simply have fewer of those reality altering discovery moments than earlier generations had. So much of what they are playing already comes pre wrapped in familiar expectations before they even press start
