Nintendo has shared the thinking behind its Ocarina of Time remake. VGC reports that Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma explained in Nintendo's latest Ask the Developer interview that he wanted the project to trigger new insights in the team's younger developers

The Switch 2 remake marks the Zelda series' 40th anniversary. Many members of the team had only worked on recent games such as Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, and the original Ocarina of Time came out 28 years ago

Aonuma said he let the team decide what to change, while admitting he gave his fair share of lectures. He explained that if producers say this is how it should be, the team naturally feels obligated to do it that way, so he tried to step back

He said he was surprised by how little the team changed, because they cared about the original far more than he had imagined. Nintendo has also announced a UK midnight launch at Argos with free replica N64 style boxes

Giving younger developers the chance to study a classic closely is a smart way to pass on design knowledge. It is also reassuring that they respected the original rather than changing everything. Fans of the N64 game will appreciate that care

How much should a remake change from the original? And what can modern developers learn from classic games?
