A24 is reportedly spending big on its Elden Ring film. Kotaku, citing the Wall Street Journal, reports that the live action adaptation has a budget of about $200 million, by far the largest in the studio's history

A source told the WSJ that the budget is on a Marvel scale. A24's previous most expensive film was Josh Safdie's Marty Supreme at $70 million, so this is almost three times as much

Only one A24 film, Backrooms, has grossed more than $200 million, and that cost just $10 million to make. The studio built its reputation on smaller, distinctive films, so this is a big change in approach

Alex Garland, director of Ex Machina and Civil War, is making the film. It was announced in 2025 and is A24's first video game adaptation, with a Death Stranding film also in development. No cast or release date has been confirmed

Garland and Elden Ring is an exciting pairing, because he is great at strange and unsettling worlds. A $200 million budget is a huge bet for a studio known for modest spending. If it works, A24 could become a serious blockbuster player

Can Elden Ring work as a live action film? And is Garland the right director for it?
