We do have merge topics. We have used it occasionally. Related topics is in fact a mod we re-wrote from scratch. It has a SMF scheduled task to constantly update the related topics. you should see upto 5-6 per topic

That sounds like a much more sensible approach than trying to calculate related topics every time someone opens a thread. Running it as a scheduled task should keep page loads nice and quick. It would be interesting to know whether it uses shared keywords, topic titles or post content to decide what counts as related.

Related topics can be surprisingly useful when they are accurate. Nothing worse than opening a thread about graphics cards and getting recommendations for gardening because two posts happened to mention the word "green". If the scheduled task keeps the index up to date and the matching is sensible, it sounds like a solid solution.
