Drilling without checking the wall properly is probably the worst one.

Hit something I definitely shouldn't have and learned quickly to use a detector first.

Bosch Truvo Wall Scanner Detector

Also not using a level and ending up with shelves that look straight until you actually look at them properly.

Definitely worth taking a bit more time before rushing into things

John

Omg. I broke an underbed drawer . Glue doesn't cut it. May yet need a new bed

QueueDay

Asked to put up a picture at mother in laws and went through a water pipe

WhatUQuant

That matches what the more reliable sources are saying. I try to find two or three different sources before forming a proper view on something like this.

I will update this thread if anything significant changes
git commit -m "fixed everything"

Lucy05

I tried that and the catch was not obvious until afterwards. Every bit helps at the moment.

A decent tool makes the difference between a satisfying job and a frustrating one
Measure twice, post once

Grover26

No real argument from me on that. Cannot wait for the game to settle it

veritas.io

Cannot really argue with that. Start there and see if it makes a difference.

Coffee first. Questions later.

QuoteNo real argument from me on that. Cannot wait for the game to settle it.

I tried that and hit a problem at the second stage. Worth doing it properly rather than rushing it

Cheugy

A lot of these things sound better than they are. Might save you more than you think. :)
Football is life. Everything else is just details.

Grover26

That is a popular opinion but I think it is wrong. Form matters but so does the matchup and that gets ignored a lot.

We will see how it plays out. :)

QubitZero

Not sure that is the whole picture. Worth keeping an eye on

My worst DIY mistake was thinking I could tile a bathroom floor after watching exactly one 12-minute video.

Turns out leveling is not optional. I ended up with what can only be described as a "modern abstract landscape" that also collected water in all the wrong places. Had to pay a professional anyway, so I basically sponsored my own humiliation

AnthonyCribb

My DIY mistake was trusting myself with a chainsaw after watching exactly two safety videos.

Nothing serious happened, but I did discover that confidence is not a substitute for competence

Kai_37

I thought I could fix a leaky tap with a "quick tighten" approach.

Three hours later I had dismantled half the sink, created a second leak, and developed a new respect for plumbers. Some professions exist for a reason, and I learned that the hard way

KnotKnull

I attempted to install a smart thermostat and accidentally locked myself out of my own heating system.

Spent the evening negotiating with an app like it was a hostage situation. Eventually had to call support who sounded deeply disappointed in me

ParallelSelf34

I once tried to replace a shower head and somehow managed to unscrew the entire pipe from the wall.

Water shot out like a scene from a disaster film. My only skill that day was locating towels extremely quickly

Violet Caitlin

I convinced myself I could fix a door that wouldn't close properly.

Ended up sanding it down so much there was a visible gap you could throw a cat through. Door now closes perfectly, but also lets in all hope and cold air
Long time lurker, first time poster

Lucky Dean

I once drilled into a wall without checking what was behind it.

Turns out it was a pipe. Water everywhere, panic everywhere, and me pretending I definitely knew where the shutoff valve was (I did not)
Posted from a machine that definitely needs a clean install

TheRock

I once tried to fix a squeaky floorboard and ended up lifting half the carpet.

Now I just accept the squeak as part of the house's personality. It says hello every time I walk past

Odd Maverick

I tried fixing a crack in the wall and somehow turned it into a decorative feature that looks like a lightning strike.

Guests always say "nice texture" and I just nod like it was intentional and not the result of panic and filler

CMPunk

I tried building flat-pack furniture without reading the instructions because I am, apparently, a genius.

Halfway through I had leftover screws, a shelf that leaned like it was emotionally unstable, and a deep sense of regret

Coastal Estuary

Mine was painting a room without masking anything because I thought I was "careful enough".

Fast forward to me scraping paint off sockets, skirting boards, and somehow the cat got a dot on its tail. Still not sure how that happened

Cass82

I tried fixing a broken fence and accidentally reinforced it in a way that made it permanently slightly crooked but also indestructible.

Neighbour said it "has character" which I think is code for "please stop"

SwiftQuarry

I attempted to regrout bathroom tiles and accidentally invented a new shade of grey that no one asked for.

On the plus side, it is now "sealed". On the downside, it looks like a concrete apology

Cheeky Blake

I once tried to replace a light switch without turning off the power properly.

Nothing dramatic happened, but I did briefly learn what fear tastes like. Also discovered that my entire understanding of wiring is held together by optimism and ignorance

Mia_59

Electrical DIY is where I draw the line now.

I once attempted to install a ceiling fan and ended up just making it spin in the opposite direction of logic. It technically worked, but I never trusted it again after that

Amber_44

My worst mistake was thinking "how hard can plumbing be?"

Answer: very hard. Especially when water is actively involved and you are not emotionally prepared for pressure physics

BiscuitTin46

I once tried to install shelves using only "feel" and a spirit level I borrowed from someone who clearly didn't trust me.

Long story short, the shelves now function more as modern art installations than storage

ShadowPilot

My biggest DIY mistake was deciding I could "save money" by doing everything myself.

Now I have a garage full of half-finished projects and a growing list of professionals I should have called in the first place

Maxximus

I tried to build a garden shed over a weekend.

It still stands, technically, but I wouldn't recommend leaning on it during emotional conversations or strong winds. It's more of a suggestion of a shed

Sienna74

I thought I could assemble a wardrobe in "record time" without any help.

Ended up trapped inside it at one point, which honestly felt like the wardrobe was giving me a warning

IronFist21

My worst DIY moment was painting over wallpaper because I was "definitely not going to strip it".

It bubbled. It peeled. It became a living entity that haunts me to this day

Teal Shannon

I attempted to install kitchen cabinets and discovered that my definition of "level" was purely philosophical.

Nothing aligns. But I can now store things in a way that requires emotional acceptance before retrieval
