Every DIY enthusiast has a favourite tool. It might be an expensive cordless drill, a battered old hammer inherited from a grandparent or a cheap multitool that somehow solves every problem. If your toolbox caught fire and you could only rescue one item, which would it be? It is a surprisingly difficult choice

Some people would pick the most expensive tool, like a mitre saw or a combi drill, simply because it would cost the most to replace. Others would save the most useful, such as a good set of screwdrivers or an adjustable spanner. And many would choose something sentimental, like a spirit level that belonged to their dad or a chisel set from an apprenticeship. Old tools often have the best stories

For me, it would be my grandad's old wooden handled hammer. It is not the best hammer I own, and the handle has been repaired twice. But he built half his house with it, and holding it feels like having him in the workshop with me. No modern tool could replace that

Please tell us which tool you would save and why. Bonus points for stories about tools that have been passed down through families or survived decades of abuse

Stanley knife, without a doubt. The most used tool in my house by far. Opening parcels counts as DIY in my house
