What is the DIY disaster story that actually taught you the most

Almost everyone who genuinely enjoys DIY projects has at least one story of a specific attempt going badly wrong, whether that is a small mistake that turned into a genuinely expensive repair, an underestimated project that ended up taking months longer than originally planned, or a moment of realising far too late that a specific job really should have been left to an actual professional from the very beginning.

What is interesting is how often these disaster stories, however frustrating and expensive they were at the time, end up becoming the specific experience that genuinely taught someone the most about what they were actually doing, far more than any project that simply went smoothly from start to finish ever could.
